Biography
Steven Anthony Knight (born August 5, 1959) is a British screenwriter, film director, novelist, and producer from Birmingham, England. He began his career in television comedy and co-created the globally franchised quiz show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? in the late 1990s before moving into feature screenwriting with Dirty Pretty Things (2002), which won him an Edgar Award, and Eastern Promises (2007), both directed by Stephen Frears and David Cronenberg respectively.
Knight is best known for creating Peaky Blinders (2013–2022), a BBC crime drama set in post-World War I Birmingham starring Cillian Murphy as gang leader Thomas Shelby, on which he served as the show's sole creator and principal writer across six series. He also wrote and directed the real-time thriller Locke (2013) starring Tom Hardy, wrote the Princess Diana drama Spencer (2021), and created the BBC/Peacock series SAS: Rogue Heroes (2022–present). He was appointed CBE in the 2020 New Year Honours for services to drama, entertainment and the community in Birmingham.
