Biography
Ryan Kyle Coogler (born May 23, 1986) is an American filmmaker from Oakland, California. He studied film at USC's School of Cinematic Arts, where his student thesis short Fig helped launch his career, and made his feature debut with Fruitvale Station (2013), a drama based on the killing of Oscar Grant that won the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival.
Coogler went on to direct Creed (2015), a Rocky spin-off starring Michael B. Jordan, before writing and directing Marvel Studios' Black Panther (2018) and its sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022), both of which centered Black and African diasporic storytelling within a major studio blockbuster. His 2025 original horror film Sinners, also starring Jordan, broke the all-time record for Academy Award nominations for an original screenplay-driven film and earned Coogler the Academy Award and BAFTA Award for Best Original Screenplay in 2026.
