Act I — Origin
Biography
Greta Celeste Gerwig (born August 4, 1983) is an American filmmaker, actress, and screenwriter. Raised in Sacramento, she studied English and philosophy at Barnard College and first came to prominence as an actress and writer in the low-budget "mumblecore" film movement of the late 2000s, co-writing and starring in Frances Ha (2012) and Mistress America (2015) with director Noah Baumbach.
Gerwig made her solo directorial debut with Lady Bird (2017), a coming-of-age film that earned Academy Award nominations for Best Picture and Best Director, making her only the fifth woman ever nominated in the latter category. She followed it with an acclaimed adaptation of Little Women (2019), then Barbie (2023), a fantasy comedy she co-wrote with Baumbach that grossed over $1.4 billion worldwide — the highest-grossing film directed solely by a woman in box-office history, and the inaugural winner of the Golden Globe for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement — and earned Gerwig, its co-writer, the Critics' Choice Award for Best Original Screenplay.
