Act I — Origin

Biography

Christopher Edward Nolan (born July 30, 1970) is a British-American film director, screenwriter, and producer. Born in London to an English father and an American mother, he began making short films on his father's Super 8 camera as a child and studied English literature at University College London, where he shot his first feature, Following (1998), on weekends over a year.

Nolan broke through with the nonlinear thriller Memento (2000) before revitalizing the Batman franchise with Batman Begins (2005), The Dark Knight (2008), and The Dark Knight Rises (2012). He has since built a reputation for large-format, effects-driven films that favor practical stunts and in-camera photography over digital work, including Inception (2010), Interstellar (2014), Dunkirk (2017), and Tenet (2020). His 2023 film Oppenheimer, a biographical drama about physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, won seven Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director. Nolan's knighthood, for services to film, was announced in a special honours list in March 2024, and he serves as President of the Directors Guild of America.
